NuuMed started making numnahs over 20 years ago for a very logical reason. Ian Pocock, who created Griffin NuuMed, had ridden since the age of five and when he reached the age of 30 (ish!) he realised that although people talked a lot about saddle fit, there was no attention paid to the impact and the quality of the numnah or saddlepad you put under this very expensive purchase (your saddle!) So he made one, and then another ... and in his lifetime designed nearly 40 different versions - and we still make virtually all of them!
Ian's drive and passion to make the best saddlepad possible for your horse is recognised throughout the equestrian industry - and many people since have tried to emulate his understanding of the horse and copy his ideas, but at NuuMed we still firmly believe that the standards he set in design, quality of making, choice of materials and innovation are still the best.
We are still based in the same factory in Somerset. We have made some changes, but only to improve further the standard of service we offer to all of our customers whether that is in flexibility, accountability, product quality, marketing support ... all of which are ongoing processes.
And just for the record ... a couple of very notable NuuMed firsts include:
- The design and production of the original HiWither design. This was the first numnah design that followed the contours of the horse's back and therefore worked with it, really helping to make a horse feel more comfortable;
- The concept and creation of a numnah that took into account the changing shape of a horse. Called the Combination numnah, it had moveable pads to allow the user to put extra support when and where needed. NuuMed's own take on this has now changed, but the original concept has not and it was another market leading move from NuuMed.
A number of our highly skilled workforce have been with NuuMed for many years - three of them since the Company began - and this huge wealth of expertise, coupled with some of our younger staff members who bring a crucial, up to date, vibrant input into what we do make a top class team.
Every NuuMed numnah, saddlepad or accessory you purchase will have passed through our very special teams of cutters, machinists, finishers and despatch specialists. And as a customer, the advice you can call on is given by people with many years experience of not just NuuMed but of horses generally. The day to day activity at NuuMed is always under the scrutiny of very experienced management eyes aiming to ensure what NuuMed produces is on time and of the right quality.
However, despite all this.... we can get it wrong sometimes! - so if we do, please let us know.
