What size do I need?

As a general guide, the NuuMed sizes relate to the following sizes:

SADDLE SIZE NUUMED SIZE
15" - 15.5" Small
16" - 16.5" Medium
17" - 17.5" Large
Over 17.5" Extra Large

Exact measurements of all our saddlepads and numnahs can be found on the page with each product (see the measurement tab).

Why should I pay more for a NuuMed numnah when there are much cheaper versions available?

There are many reasons:

  • NuuMed numnahs last and give real value for money.
  • NuuMed products are proven as some of the best designed numnahs. They work effectively with your saddle and in doing so, help ensure your horse is as comfortable as possible through his back;
  • NuuMed use British wool in many of their lines and this, we believe, is the best material to have next to a horse's back (see product page/materials)
  • NuuMed still make all their products in the UK which makes asking advice, sourcing exactly what you need and ensuring you get high quality products much easier
Isn't wool too hot to use in the summer?

No. Wool is the best material to use in summer because of its moisture absorption qualities and its ability to circulate air. NuuMed saddlepads are used in 100 mile endurance competitions in the Middle East - a true test of their ability to perform in the heat.

Is wool better than sheepskin?

NuuMed wool is specially woven for NuuMed and has all the benefits of sheep-skin and none of the disadvantages. We use wool shorn from the sheep and knitted onto a cotton yarn backing. This backing takes the place of a skin and is easier to look after, doesn't get heavy when wet, doesn't disintegrate and has not been through lots of chemical processes to make it usable.

NuuMed - giving you all the wool you need with no skin attached.

Can I wash a NuuMed wool numnah?

Yes, every day if you wish. Just make sure you follow the washing guidelines.

My horse hasn't got a high wither so surely I don't need a HiWither numnah?

Whether or not a horse has high wither or not, all numnahs and pads should clear the wither and sit into the gullet of the saddle to ensure there is no pressure anywhere along the back.

Is it better to use a numnah or a saddlepad?

Apart from any guidelines issued by any of the disciplines governing bodies, the choice is entirely one of personal preference.

I cannot find a numnah to fit my saddle. Any ideas?

As the number of different saddle designs on the market increases, NuuMed make a growing number of made to measure numnahs for riders keen to make sure they have one which fits properly and does not ‘just make do'. Contact NuuMed for more details.

If I want to use a half numnah with a pad, which goes underneath?

If it is a NuuMed half wool numnah, ideally it should go next to the horses's skin to enable the horse to enjoy the benefits of wool.

During a tack inspection at a recent Pony Club rally, my daughter was told that her saddlepad was bunched up under the girth and likely to cause the horse real discomfort - and that the pad was too far back and likely to cause a problem where the panel was sitting on the binding on the front of the pad. Putting a saddlepad on correctly seems such a straightforward task, but we clearly got it wrong. Any advice?

This is an all too common scenario, but unfortunately most people don't have the problems pointed out to them. To avoid any potential problems, we suggest the following:

  • Put the saddlepad onto the horse without the saddle, slightly in front of where the saddle will sit. This ensures that when you put the saddle on top and slide it back into position, you will be moving it in the same direction as the horse's coat;
  • When doing the girth up, check the straps are not caught up on either the nearside or the offside;
  • Check the pad is sitting centrally;
  • Make sure the pad is sitting well up into the gullet of the saddle at the front and the back of the saddle. A NuuMed pad will not only do this but it will stay there while the horse is being worked;
  • Check that there is no part of the saddle sitting on the binding as this is potentially a real problem and can/does put horses out of work because the area becomes too sort for a horse to be saddled up. There should be a clear margin of pad or numnah visible around the saddle.
